Harrison on Werther The dynamic American tenor Steven Harrison, who is acclaimed as one of the foremost interpreters of the doomed poet in Massenet's Werther, made his South African debut in Cape Town Opera's production at Artscape Opera House. Musician/Critic Barry Smith wrote of this performance, "He has an immaculate feeling for the idiom and produces singing and acting of an extremely high standard. He is a musician who understands exactly what the music is trying to say and delivers it with fastidious attention to detail." Steven Harrison speaks with Cape Town Journalist Beverley Brommert during a rehearsal of "Werther." This will be the first production of the Massenet opera ever to appear in Cape Town and the anticipation is quite high. Steven speaks about his career, travelling, and the joys of life on the road.

CAPE TIMES features Steven Harrison in his highly anticipated upcoming debut with Cape Town Opera as Werther. South African journalist Fiona Chisolm highlights the tenor's "Powerful presence on stage and off." She spoke to the tenor in email conversations which started in Germany and ended en route to Rome where Harrison was singing the Beethoven 9th Symphony with Maestro Antonio Pappano and the Santa Cecilia Orchestra.

After living in the Marche region of Italy as a student while attending the University of Urbino in 1987, Steven returns to Macerata to portray the French poet Andrea Chénier in Giordano's opera. He embraces this role with humility, respect and admiration following a long tradition of great tenors from the Marche province heard in this role, including Del Monaco, Corelli and, of course, Gigli.
